As the 2026 General Elections approach, Bukimbiri County in Kisoro District is emerging as a high-stakes political battleground.
Three key contenders are vying for the parliamentary seat, each determined to win over the electorate with their distinct political experience and grassroots support.
At the forefront is Asingariyo Turyagyenda, who narrowly lost to NRM's Eddy Kwizera Wangahungu during the 2022 Bukimbiri by-elections.
Undeterred, Turyagyenda staged a strong comeback in the recently concluded NRM party primaries, winning the party flagbearer position.
His renewed confidence and extensive grassroots mobilization are expected to play a decisive role in the upcoming race.
Eddy Kwizera Wangahungu, the incumbent MP, will also be on the ballot, this time as an Independent candidate.
After losing the NRM primaries on May 17, Wangahungu opted to contest outside the party framework, relying on his record in office and deep connections within local communities to maintain a competitive edge.
The contest is completed by James Owebeyi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), who previously ran in the 2022 by-election.
Owebeyi’s decision to run again underscores his resilience and determination to offer voters an alternative vision for leadership in Bukimbiri County. His campaign is likely to attract residents seeking change from the dominant political forces.
With each candidate bringing a unique political background and dedicated supporters, Bukimbiri County is set for an intensely contested parliamentary race.
As campaigns kick off this week, voters can expect vibrant rallies, shifting alliances, and spirited debates as the constituency prepares to select its next representative.
One thing is certain: Bukimbiri County will remain one of the most closely watched constituencies in Uganda’s 2026 General Elections.
